Have updated to latest OS and Photos for my iMac, want to put my iPhotos in the iCloud....plenty of gb storage there. Photos are around 25gb, but I have about 40 gb in iCloud. For many hours it just says "updating", no number indicated and no progress on the status bar.
I have tried starting over with same result.
Any suggestions?

The sync takes a long time. If you go to iCloud.com/Photos, do you see any pictures there?
The only photos in iCloud.com/photos are from my iPhone, none from my iMac.
I left it going for 5-6 hrs yesterday and today and nothing seems to happen. Says "updating" but no progress.
Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop syncing. Wait a couple of minutes, then recheck syncing.
Have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?
