itunes sync/driver software

hello, i'm trying to sync iPhone 3gs with iTunes on windows 8 but phone not appearing through usb cable. after looking at forums and apple support for an insanely long time, I'm still not sure whether I need to download Apple device usb driver software or from where to do that safely. Its probably a ridiculous question but I've not owned an IPhone before, and any advice is much appreciated
