one thing i noticed after installing a new hard drive and needing to rate my songs was that i couldn't select a group of songs and rate them with a single click. I had to manually rate each song 1 at a time

I know what I should have but I do not have it. I right click and rating is not one of the options.
even if i right click a single song the rating option doesn't appear in the menu
Select Edit > Preferences > General, change the Ratings dropdown from "Love" to "Stars" - the item below "Get Info" in the context menu will change from "Love" to "Rating" (with the submenu as shown in tt2's screenshot). Apple did a disservice to iTunes' users who are older than 14 by making the ridiculous "Love" function the default ... not that I make use of either (my ratings system is good music = in my collection, bad music = not in my collection).

you solved my problem yet pressing that button does nothing all I can do is select that you helped.
iTunes 12.3.2.35 doesn't allow me to rate multiple selected songs at once.
