I use the iTunes cloud to manage my music on my iPhone, so I don't actually sync to my desktop for music.
Is there a way to download smaller song files to my phone? I like the maximum bitrate for my main library on my computer, but I would rather have the space than the quality on my phone. How can I do this?

You will have to sync the phone with iTunes on your computer. There is a setting in iTunes to lower the bit rate when transferring music to iOS. This would not affect the music on your computer, but will save space on the iPhone.

The only way to compress music is to transfer it from your computer.
