Is there a way for iOS apps to update automatically during syncing?

I noticed that with iOS 9.2.1 apps that I've updated in iTunes are not automatically updated in my iOS devices during the sync process. I need to scroll through the entire list of apps, select the updated apps I want transferred to my devices, and then sync. I'm not sure of the logic behind this change as it just creates an extra step and requires more time.

I have been trying to find a way in preferences to change this, so that when I update apps in iTunes on my Mac, and then sync my devices, iTunes will automatically update all the apps on the device. Is there a way to do this?

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Check to make sure this setting in iTunes is on:

"Automatically install new apps" under the list of Apps in your Apps tab when looking at the Device settings (device must be connected).
