macbook pro 15 inch retina won't detect display

Hi, my macbook pro will not detect an external ASUS display connected with HDMI. I have tried using the settings menu and pressing options while pressing detect display, but nothing happens. I have tried unplugging the display and reconnecting it, restarting my mac--still nothing. Any advice? I have a mid 2015 model running OS X 10.11.3
