If I share photos to the icloud with my iphone, then view them on my PC, are they automatically downloaded, or do I need another step to preserve them on myPC?

What exactly do you mean by share. Are you using iCloud photo library, photo stream or shared albums.
Not sure. Had an old Iphone 3s with no service. Wanted to get the photos from it to the computer. Was told the only way was to move them to icloud, retrieve on my current phone then to PC. I blelieve I must have used share.
