How to get rid of dropbox

I have dropbox on my iMac and I want to get rid of it. I'm sick of getting messages saying that I need to buy more space. I have tried to drag it to the trash from Finder but I get a message that I can't delete it because it is open. I can't find a way to close it. Can anybody help?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Hey mickenglish,
I understand that you would like to uninstall Dropbox from your Mac. I can help you out with that.
I have found the exact steps that you need to follow right from Dropbox's website. You would need to unlink your account and the quit Dropbox so that you can remove the app from your Mac. Take a look at the link below for more details on removing Dropbox.
