I phone issues

Hi, my iphone 4 is locked and the only thing i see on my screen after i connect it to my mac is the iTunes logo with the wire pointing at it. Also, I have attempted to use my passcode multiple times that i got locked and the only way it's telling me to restore it is by connecting it to iTunes. I am not sure of what version it is on but i haven't used the phone for over a year.
