iTunes crashes on launch everytime - El Capitan

Yesterday I synced and backed up my iPhone 6 with iTunes. The next day iTunes immediately crashed on launch producing an error report similar as the one below. Ever since I have not been able to launch iTunes without it immediately crashing. I only use iTunes for backup and occasionally transferring audiobooks to my iPhone.

It have the latest iTunes version: 12.3.2 (12.3.2.35) on OS X 10.11.3 (15D21).

My actions leading up to the crash:

  • sync and backup op iPhone (via cable).
  • ran CCleaner with 'iTunes' checked to clean.
  • removed DivX from my Mac.

What I've tried so far to fix it, and unfortunately didn't work:

  • Restarted Mac... obviously
  • Reinstalled iTunes with the installer package.
  • Booted in Safe mode and launched iTunes from there.
  • Removed all iTunes preference (.plist) files from the Application data user folder.
  • Created new iTunes library by booting with option key pressed.
  • Restored from previous iTunes library.
  • Repaired Disk Permissions (via Terminal).

After those attempts I now get a dialog stating the following:

"The last time you opened iTunes, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?"

Which of the two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen" I select doesn't matter, the crash still occurs.

What did work: created new user and launched iTunes successfully from that account. Unfortunately this is not workable solution for me.

I hope someone can help me with this problem.

Wouter, I think that CClean messed up iTunes.

CClean is working reasonably well on Windows, but such apps should not be used on Macs. I propose to uninstall it.

(zulke programma's zijn rotzooi op de mac).

Dit helpt wellicht na de complete uninstall van CClean:

download the OSX Combo Update:

Download OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 Combo Update

install it, it should fix the compromised system files (iTunes is part of OSX).

The issue remains when everything is disconnected; it is the same situation in which the issue was discovered.

I have tried reinstalling iTunes in the first go, but despite a successful installation the problem remains...

I think that some sort of corruption has been done on a user level. Reinstalling the application both via the Combo update as the individual app installer didn't resolve any issues. Being able to use iTunes as a different user tells me the problem is not with the application itself.

Hopefully you or someone else has some other ideas regarding this matter.

I have no other cleaning or optimizing apps running on my mac. As for CCleaner, hadn't used it in ages, remnant of the early days ...regrets.

Please back up all data.

As a test, move the iTunes library folder from the Music folder (or wherever you keep it in your home folder) to the Desktop. If you've moved the library folder to another volume, unmount the volume.

Quit and relaunch the application. It may prompt you to create a new library, or to select an existing one. Create a new one and import a few tracks. Test.

After testing, quit again and put the original library back where it was, replacing the test library. Post your results.

Indeed I have a lot of remarks to make, most of those have nothing to do with the issue at hand, but in context of cleaning your mac of rubbish and incompatible software and old software that you do not use anymore.

-- Is this the version of Etrecheck you have just downloaded? The latest version is 2.9.3. The one displayed here is a very old version... The new version is much better.

1. first thing to do to make things easier is:

- in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems selct all entries and remove them with the minus sign. Then restart the mac.

2. remove the following:

. Startupdisk->Library->StartupItems: every file that is in there (one).

. Startupdisk->Library->LaunchAgents: HWPortCfg.plist

. Startupdisk->Library->LaunchDaemons: org.cindori.TEAuth.plist, org.virtualbox.startup.plist, com.paragon.ntfs12.refresh.plist

. SystemPreferences-> uninstall Paragon NTFS, leave the Tuxeire NTFS alone for the moment: one is enough.

- then In Finder select your Home folder in the left panel, Finder Menu->View->ShowViewOptions: check "Show Library Folder". Then in your Home folder select the Library folder and delete all files except the two synology plists.

NOW restart the mac.

the situation must be better already.

3. Download the new version of Etrecheck and run it, post the list here.

There is a lot more to do, but I must ask you some questions on what you use.

Lex

Hi Linc, tnx for your involvement.

I have moved the iTunes library folder and launched iTunes. Results are the same as before:

  1. Launch iTunes
  2. Dialog pops up asking me to reopen windows

In background visible: iTunes Quick Tour and the iTunes main app window

  3. Click either option
  4. Crash!

Full crash report can be found here: http://pastebin.com/9JFD6pMB

That was indeed a very old version of EtreCheck. I've done my pre-spring cleaning as per instruction and generated a new report with the latest EtreCheck version. It's true that over the years garbage kept piling up... the downside of using Timemachine for migration to new laptops.

Thanks for the clean-up tips. It already made rebooting much faster 🙂

OK, we go on.

4. Starting with the SystemPreferences Panel:

-- Flashplayer, this is "holed", use ClickToFlash in Safari extensions: you can choose when to use Flashplayer before it starts:

http://hoyois.github.io/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/

-- Do you really need the NTFS driver? OSX can read NTFS drives but not write. Is it necessary to have NTFS formatted disks? If not uninstall the Fuse for OSX driver. It is not really bad but when not necessary, remove.

-- Growl's compatibility is not so sure, and Apple Notifications is much better, so remove.

-- Java is probably not needed anymore, the Oracle version(8) is not clean, the old Apple(6) Java is not recommended anymore. Remove.

-- Menumeters, not compatible? serves at nothing. Remove.

-- In all modern players/converters all codecs are from Perian now. Perian can go, the codecs are already there. Remove.

Restart after this. We will look for remnants later.

5. Safari extensions (look at Chrome extensions too):

-- Do you really need Sinology Downloader? I don't.

6. Do you need/use Picasa? If yes, let it be; if no, uninstall. Be sure to back up all photos and other files.

7. Uninstall Fiplab MemoryClean, imperative !

8. By now it is time to uninstall Scrollreverser. Perhaps you think you need that little tool (that came about when Lion was introduced) because you use windows computers too; but I never missed it and I use Windows computers too. But basically it is harmless.

9. What do you the iOSinstaller for: everything iOS is iTunes now. UNINSTALL, it is running and my well be the cause of your issue.

Now Restart again.

maybe an new etrecheck list for the next session.

My notes are primarily to get your mac cleaned, and at the same time your iTunes issues will be solved.

In the next cleaning I will ask you questions about new, official and old, unofficial Adobe apps (and keygenerators)..... perhaps they are not any longer in use but there is a lot of rubbish still present.

Also we have to clean the apps/tools that have left extensions in the extensions folders.

Also we have to discuss Checkpoint

Also we have to discuss the modified SIP

Also we have to discuss all those Internetplugins that have to go....

So, happy computing,

Lex

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
