Q: Airwatch Inbox (via Airwatch Container) will not sync in background

My company have switch the office mobiles to Lumias using Airwatch. I asked if I could use Airwatch on my iPhone 5S (iOS 9.2.1) instead and they agreed.
They created me an Airwatch account (Airwatch container format as I didn't want Airwatch Agent which gives them access to clear my personal phone remotely!) and I installed the relevant apps yesterday on my 5S. The only one I really care about is the Airwatch inbox for my emails.
The Airwatch Inbox is working in that I can send and receive e-mails from within the app
However, even though the sync-interval for the app is set to 'auto' which according to VMWare means as frequent as possible, the background sync simply isn't happening. In order to see if I have new email I have to open the app and leave it open. When I open the app it shows a last updated time of whenever I last opened the app until it has had a minute to run the latest sync.
My normal personal iPhone email inbox is working fine so I know Activesync is working on the phone to some degree but apparently isn't working for the Airwatch Inbox.
The Airwatch app is working for the Lumia users and I'm worrying that I will be forced to switch to the Nokia phone if I can't get this resolved. None of our IT people seem to know what is causing it.
