backup hd disappeared from desktop

Today I received a message that my Time Machine backup failed. Upon checking it out, I find that my internal backup HD icon has disappeared from my desktop. Yikes! How do I find it & get it back? I'm running First Aid on the backup disk and the info window says "not mounted." However, it found the disk in the finder window,

Thanks for all the helpful input. I now have an external backup drive. My new question now is, can I use Time Machine to do automatic backups on both the internal and external drive, and if so how do I set it up? Time Machine Preferences seems to only allow me to do one or the other. Since my internal drive appears to be still working, I'd like to use them both.
