Q: Using VNC to remote into user machine disconnects wifi

I work as an Apple support desk technician for a corporation, and, when attempting to VNC into specific machines as an admin user to run testing, add printers, etc., I am finding that these machines will drop their wifi connection, and their wireless access rendered useless until they reboot.  I thought certain machines were giving me issues due to wireless conditions in their area, but I have had 3-5 machines do this in the past few weeks.  This was not an issue previously.

 

I am using a Late 2013 27" iMac running El Cap, and the computers I've seen have this issue tend to be Macbook Pros (I believe Retina models) running 10.10.5.  The issue occurs from both ARD and vnc://{ip address}

 

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

    Dig around in Console.app for errors, and remove and test without the inevitably-installed corporate antivirus tool.

    surprisingly, (though thankfully,) we do not pre-load anti-virus software onto our Macs.

    Use Etrecheck to go looking for expected or unexpected add-ons, too.

     

    This can still be a problem with the Wi-Fi, of course.

     

    Make sure there's only one network connection enabled in System Preferences.   Likely Wi-Fi, in your case.

     

    See if a wired connection craters in the same fashion, too.

    Having the exact same issue.

     

    Not an issue with a wired connection, but if the target system is on wireless, the incoming VNC session kills the wireless and wireless will not work until the system is restarted. There are no AV applications or other 3rd-party installs in play. This is happening on multiple systems running different versions of OSX 10.9, 10.10. Doesn't matter which VNC client is used to connect, behavior is consistent using different clients from Windows, Linux and other OSX boxes.

     

    Thought possibly the issue is related to a VNC connection being equivalent to a "lock screen" which also apparently will drop wireless, so pursued the suggested airport prefs DisconnectOnLogout=NO thread but with no results.

     

    Did you ever find a consistent resolution to this issue? It's really having a negative impact here.
