iphone won't connect to iTunes when plugged in...why?

i plugged my iPhone into my macbook and when i opened up iTunes, my phone was not connected!! I'm not sure why?

Is your Mac OS X 10.8.5 or later?

Is Mac iTunes 12.3.2?

You'll need both to sync with iOS 9.x
