I have an old macbook recently formatted and can not version iwork 09 to install. I had bought this version and did the online updates, however now that formatted the macbook can not access the version 09. How do I?

First you will need a working copy of the iWork installer, if the purchase was from Mac App Store, Double click the installer file, if you have a retail DVD disc, insert the disc in the DVD drive then double click the installer and follow the instructions.
Does this procedure not work?
If you don't have either of these, you can still purchase iWork from Amazon or Ebay.
