Many games have been legitimately distributed through torrent, many required having to login and authenticate with the game servers prior to being able to play. NASA and other government agencies have released public information by distributing it through torrents. A few years ago I recall a music album being released solely by distributing it through a torrent.

Saying don't use torrent is like saying don't watch a DVD because people have sold pirated movies and software on DVD media. A torrent client is not illegal, how you use it can be--just like many other things.

Personally I am a fan of qBittorrent which is open-source and available for a wide variety of platforms.

Maybe in 1957. 😉

There is nothing illegal about torrent software. And in the past there were legitimate uses for it as I mentioned. The reason why some Linux distros installers are available that way is because they can't afford fast servers so a torrent can be faster to download in that case.

Personally I can't think of anything I can't download without torrent software.

chroot is perfectly correct. There is nothing inherently unsafe or illegal about torrent technology. His/her analogy with DVD is perfectly correct and accurate.

The health warnings about what is downloaded are also perfectly accurate. Apart from the theft of other people's work, installing a pirated copy of software is the act of an idiot, but that does not change the fact that Bit Torrent technology is both legal and as safe as any other way of sharing data.

You have to distinguish between the technology and the use it is sometimes put to. They're not the same thing.

Yes and no. I will never believe that once someone finds out they can download their favorite movies or albums for free they won't. I also believe that's the number one use of torrent software.

The temptation is too great and people are too weak.
