final cut studio 7 problems importing mov files

I have some archival footage from 16mm film that has been converted from mp4 files to mov files. When I attempt to import them into my new project, I get an error message something like: "file recognized, not allowed" or something like that. I have been unable to import any files into the project. Any ideas why this is? Thanks for your help.

How were the files converted?

Is the format the files were converted to FCP friendly?

The .mov file extension is like a cardboard box labeled "movies inside". It doesn't reveal the type of movie that is in the box.

Can you play the file in QuickTime Player?
