Cannot connect to itunes store or app store

My recently upgraded iPhone 6 Plus will not allow me to connect to the iTunes store or the app store. When I go to sign in and put in the correct user ID and password, I receive the error message "cannot connect to iTunes store." Restarting the phone does not help.
