what is photos Version 1.0.1

Some time ago, I inadvertently downloaded photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0) thinking it was an update for iPhoto. I have searched the web and this site and cannot find any information on what this actually is used for! It seems redundant and I see no way of organizing my photos. When I plut in my phone to upload photos or try to upload a photo to a forum or Craigslist, "photo" comes up first in line and I have to move to cursor to iPhoto.

Can I safely remove it or will it also delete all of the photos on iPhoto?

This Help text explains what Photos can do. Photos Help

Photos is the new application that Apple is supporting for basic photo management and editing. iphoto is no longer developed, New Macs come with Photos instead of iPhoto.

Can I safely remove it or will it also delete all of the photos on iPhoto?

Photos is a part of MacOS X and not a separate application. It is not possible to uninstall it, because it is protected by the System Integrity Protection.

You cannot delete it without modifying your system.

If you try to delete it, you will see this alert:

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear. It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue. Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

Photos is a new and different program for managing photos - support for iPhoto has been discontinued (well over a year ago) and someday with some upgrade to the OS iPhoto 9.6.1 will quit working completely so before that you need a new photo management solution - Photos is one to consider as it will migrate your iPhoto library and under ElCaptain version 1.3 exceeds iPhoto's capabilities in nearly all areas - it is a new and different program and does have a learning curve - and it is part of the OS so you can not delete - if you choose not to use it just ignore it - is is installed when you install the OS so it will always be there

Depends

If everything is in iPhoto then simply migrate your iPhoto library to Photos - drag the iPhoto library to the Photos icon in the Dock - but if you only want to move select Photos (rather that replace the Photos library with the current iPhoto library) then export the photos form iPhoto and import into Photos - or migrate the iPhoto library and use PowerPhotos to move photos between the two libraries

Very good information! Thank you!

Last week, while trying to organize iPhoto, I inadvertently deleted a couple of folders (I used to organize photos into months and then into the year). For example, I lost all of my Jan. 2015 photos after having highlighting them and attempting to drop them into a new 2015 folder. I cannot find them in trash.

Any suggestions on where to look?

In Photos folder do not contain photos - they contain albums or other folders adn are only logical organizational elements - if you delete a folder that is all that happens the albums and the folder are deleted - the photos in the albums are not affected in any way - so if you deleted a folder in error you can either restore your backup from when it was there or recreate it form the photos that were in it

Deleted folders and albums to not go to the recently deleted album - only photos go to the recetently deleted album - nothing deleted from Photos go to the trash

Thanks to all of you for your help. I believe that I have managed to transfer all of my photos from iPhoto to Photo. Now it is time to use Photo Help and continue to learn the new system.

Now a new issue has arisen. In the past, I would open iPhoto, I plug the USB cable into my Droid Maxx, and upload my photos. I just plugged in my phone while both iPhoto and Photo were open and my new photos were waiting on iPhoto waiting for me to upload them. I closed iPhoto, unplugged the phone, reconnected it and nothing happens in Photo. I checked with Photo Help and these are the instructions...

1. Connect a camera, iPad, iPhone, or other iOS device to your computer with a USB cable.

(My phone is currently charging)

2. Make sure the camera or device is turned on and the camera is set to the correct mode for importing photos.

(with the Maxx, nothing other than plugging in the usb was needed)

3. Open Photos (if it isn’t already open), then click Import in the toolbar.

(When I click import, the box opens up that I was using earlier to export from iPhoto but I do not see an option to import from my camera)

Note: The Import button only appears when a camera or storage device is connected.

You really have to the take the help menu quick tour of Photos and read Help menu topics and then go take a class - this is a very slow and painful way to learn how to use a new program

And when you request help you have to give details and use proper descriptions - I have no idea what you what to to or what you did or what the problem you have that you want help with is - In Photos folders do not hold Photos - folder hold other folders or albums and you give us no clue as to what you mean by move - from where to where and why
