Q: Mac is slow using latest OS - maybe add memory?

Hello, all -- As described below, my Mac has been getting slower and slower over the past year, but has recently really gotten bad.  I'm wondering if I just need more memory, or if something more drastic (faster drive possibly) is in order.  I posted the results of today's EtreCheck.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Problem: Computer is too slow

Description:

In the past few months, my Mac has just gotten very slow, but slow I mean for instance, when I click on the System Preferences Icon, it takes 7 seconds to display the preferences.  Earlier today when I clicked on Finder to see if my hard drive was full, it took about 5 seconds to give me a new window and several more seconds to display my HD properties. Switching between tabs in Chrome takes about 2 seconds. My most resource intensive app, Lightroom can take 4 or 5 seconds to go from picture to picture. Really bad.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Is this enough log?  As you know, there's lots more , but pretty much just a repeat of the "ipodscrobbler" (is that from LastFM?) and the Radio Recorder's missing URL.  Since I ran the EtreScan yesterday the laptop seems a little faster.  Wishful thinking possibly. Thanks for your help, Linc.  Much appreciated.

That log extract mentions two applications: "iPodScrobbler" and "Radio Recorder." Are those the only ones you're having trouble with? If not, do you still have the problem when those apps are not running?

Hey Linc: I didn't even know I had an application called Ipodscrobbler, but I speculate it might have something to do with my Lastfm application (that tracks songs that I have played in iTunes).  The Radio recorder app runs in the background and records my favourite radio programs so that I can listen to them later. It doesn't seem to run slowly.  But I will turn it off and see if there are performance improvements over this weekend. I don't know how to turn off ipodscrobbler, though.  Is there an OS X equivalent of ctrl-alt-del that brings up a task manager so I can halt it?

go to spotlight and type "activity monitor" without the quotes

OPT+CMD+Q to quit a process in activity monitor

from the finder it's CMD+OPT+ESC to force quit if an app if it is stuck
