Q: Restart fails. Error message: The Finder can't quit because some operations are still in progress.
Unable to shut down or restart. Dialog box advises "The Finder can't quit because some operations are still in progress." I'm unable to find what those are. Ran Disk Utility and tried again with same result. Sure would appreciate your help!

Can you press and hold the Power button down for perhaps up to 30 seconds to be sure the
computer is not simply put to sleep; you want it to shut down. Then on startup try to get it to
run in Safe mode so you can troubleshoot and attempt to check into the system as suggested:
• Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
Additional links to other content that may be helpful to troubleshoot are included in above page.
Another item is Force Quit... it can be used to quit the finder:
• Force an app to close on your Mac - Apple Support
You may be able to use startup keyboard shortcuts to see about other actions on boot; such as
attempts to use the Recovery modes for other restorative actions, repair permissions, etc or to
reinstall OS X again. If you have a backup of your content and also a Time Machine backup.
There is a fair reason to suggest you could restore the computer to a functioning state of before
these last symptoms or issues became so expansive. The original hardware test would be on
the computer install-restore Apple DVD set that it shipped with. That may be worth a go, too.
• Startup key combinations for Mac - Apple Support
• Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support
• Apple OS X and Time Machine Tips:

• OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
{Certain more recent models could have been updated to use Internet Recovery to re-start the computer
from online system -- if internal drive and its recovery partition were somehow lacking any boot system.
Your model appears to be too old for incorporation or upgrade to make use of that feature, however...}
If you had an externally enclosed drive with a full system clone on board, that could be used to test
and troubleshoot the hardware aspect of the computer; and a source for offline re-clone installation.
Perhaps the 'etrecheck guy' will look into this thread and point out some details that I'm not very familiar.
Good luck in this matter!
