Q: Maximum charge lost 10% in 3 months

My Macbook is 3 months (bought on 02. November 2015) old and has 42 load cycles.

I use CoconutBattery to see, how the battery works.

At the beginning I had a maximum charge of 5297 mAh and now after 3 months I have a max. charge of 4792 mAh. This is nearly 10% less.

I use the MacBook normally without power if I'm on the way and connect it to power, if I'm in the office or train.

My old MacBook Pro after 3 years has 87% maximum charge of the design capacity.

So I think, that MacBooks battery has a problem? SMC reset changed nothing.

What can I do?

    This is normal.

"The capacity of any type of battery will diminish after a certain amount of recharging. With lithium-ion batteries, the capacity diminishes slightly with each complete charge cycle. Apple lithium-ion batteries are designed to hold at least 80% of their original capacity for a high number of charge cycles, which varies depending on the product. "

80% of 5265 is 4212, so you are still in the normal range.

In my opinion, your battery seems to be losing its capacity too quickly. While you are still within the 80% use, according to the Apple website, the batteries are designed to keep 80% of their charge, up to 1000 cycles.

I've currently complete 35 cycles, and still have over 99% of my battery's original capacity.

I have a similar problem but the symptoms are much more severe.

I am down to 72% after 32 cycles in just under 2.5 months.

I use CoconutBattery to monitor this.  Here is a link to the battery health history of my MB:

    http://ccbonline.coconut-flavour.com/index.php?bid=bd39201d3da7d04791d842fac673c a59

This does not look good in my opinion and also according to the average battery health reported by Coconut Battery.

I have been using MB and MB Air since 2006 and have never seen this type of deterioration.

My usage pattern is as :

    • (During the day) Once the battery is fully charged (during use), I disconnect the charger and let it drain to ± 10% and then connect power again.
    • Overnight I put the MB in sleep mode and during that time it is not connected to power.

    Please advise

With your usage pattern during day, you will collect a lot of load cycles, right?

I think, we need the perfect mix between external power and battery usage to decrease load cycles and increase max. charge.

I have changed my usage and I'm now use more battery to prevent permanently connect to charge.

Since three days the max. charge is growing to 95% (5042 mAh) with 50 load cycles.

I have 2 load cycles in a day, if I don't forget to disconnect when the battery is full.

But I don't understand how load cycles are counted.

I started using the MB as my only machine on January 4th this year.  I use it every weekday (rarely on the weekend) and every night it is disconnected from the battery and reconnected the next day.  This would represent roughly 43 days of usage (weekdays from Jan 4 to Mar 3).  Yet, I only see 32 charging cycles see below.

1 load cycle is usage of 100% battery.

If you start at 100% and use 90% battery you have 0.9 load cycle.

if you start at 100% and use 50% battery, connect to charge to 100% and use again 50% you have 1 load cycle.

    That makes sense.
