Q: g4 mirrored drive door system failure

I have a G4 MDD/Panther. I tried to install Tiger from various disks but now I cant get pass the grey apple screen.

    If you hold alt key at powerup, do you see boot choices?

     

    Are these Gray machine specific Install Discs, or Black Retail Install Discs?

    Only boot choice is the HD, which failed. Once, I believe, it was an install disk, also failed. I made so many experiments that I lost track.

     

    Disks are grey and black and also a homebrew Tiger CD that somebody made and a Tiger boot DVD that I made.

     

    The MDD was OK til I tried to install Tiger. After failure, I even tried and failed to install a new Panther from black disks. I even tried and failed to install 10.1.  I have a vague memory that Disk Utility said disk was bad but the MDD worked OK so I ignored it and tried the install.
