iPad stuck in point mode in switch control!

I recently setup my iPad 2 for switch control and following an upgrade to the most recent iOS version my switch control seems to be stuck in point mode. I can select item mode from the scanning menu but it does not change the selection mode. I have tried this on the home page and in iMessage with the same results always point mode. Anyone seem a similar problem? Possible solution?
