I tried to update my phone and it just went to the restore mode and is locked. I brought it into an apple store a couple days ago but now that the problem is affecting more people I have no idea if apple will decide to fix it now.

But the issue's resolution will depend on where you might have had previous repair service performed per this article from Apple:
If you see error 53 or can't update or restore your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
So if no outside agency repaired your iPhone, then bring it in to Apple and let them assess your iPhone.
Possibly. This article suggests that some Apple stores will clear error 53 for you.
