Q: tried to install snow leopard over 10.5.8 but it failed and restarted now i cant boot 10.5.8

i had bought mac snow leopard, and tried to install it to my mac-book late 2008 aluminum, it failed to install, i  clicked try again, so it restart it. it came up with the language screen and i thought it was the clean install way of doing it, but i DON'T WANT TO DELETE MY DRIVE because family memories, so i eject snow leopard and tried booting up back to 10.5.8 but that didn't work, it just turned off, so my question is, is there any way to install mac snow leopard without deleting all my files, if not than any other way to get all those files safe again. please and thank you. i did not backup :

    Start with the backup.

See if your data copies over OK - do you have another Mac to view your files after the copy completes? It is worth checking it looks OK, because we don't even know if your disk has failed or corrupted - sometimes hardware dies at very odd moments.

Then you can think about erasing the internal disk & installing 10.5 or 10.6.

You have 2 Apple approved ways to 'migrate' this data from the backup.

Both methods allow you to select a few 'categories' of items to move,

    • Applications - includes all supporting files
    • Users - can select which accounts
    • Other data & settings - everything else that was at the base of the disk.

Just be aware that if you choose to copy everything your disk may become too full again & you may be back to the same problem.

    Setup Assistant

This is during the setup process, you are prompted to transfer from another Mac or disk.

    Migration Assistant

This is after install completes & you have a working system. You can run Migration Assistant at any time to move the data. It is an Application that should be in /Applications/Utilities

One important point with Migration Assistant - you cannot import a user with the same name as an existing user on that Mac. Be sure to make an account with a different name if you decide to go through setup.

You could re-run Migration Assistant at a later date if you want to migrate a category that you left out first time around, so long as the backup is still around.

i'm sorry i'm using your time. i'm just really worried, but just in anything like, earlier yesterday i had tried to install snow leopard as you know, it told me to clear space and at least have i forgot exact number but, somewhere around 5 GB, so i did, but then it errored. it restarted with the language setup, then i went to disk utility and checked if my hard drive is okay. it said verified and had the memory a little less than it showed earlier, instead of 5 GB, it said 4. the files number seemed correct, and the S.M.A.R.T said verified , so i thought the hard drive was fine, so i exit out of installer and eject the disk, then i start up the mac and it would just have the apple logo, for some time and turn of, and so, backing up my drive by using disk utility with a external hd, and wiping the disk clean off the computer and installing snow leopard or leopard, and plugging the external drive back in, will i be able most likely see my photos and videos, because those are too special, and again i really appreciate the help man i really need it

I just needed to know which part was about your videos & pictures. I understand you are concerned, please try to take things steady. If you need other help you may need to go to an Apple store or seek a service centre, it will cost you money for hardware this old though.

The backup I am are suggesting will take all the data - including videos & photos. It should be a full copy of the Mac's boot disk provided the disk & Mac are working.

You should also be able to copy them back to another account after you reinstall OS X if you can get a backup of them.
