Why does available space on my phone read as one figure, yet, when plugged into computer, itunes reads another figure?

I've got an iphone 6+, on 9.2.1. I'm getting a little concerned and confused as to why, when I look at available space on my phone it is telling me 3.2gb, yet itunes tells me 8.5. Why does this happen, and, if anyone can help me, how can it be remedied?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.2.1

Add them up and divide by two! 😁

A while back I faced a similar situation. I determined that there was a phantom movie (one that I had actually deleted) that was accounting for the extra usage. The only solution that I found was a Restore. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync and follow on-screen instructions.
