iPod Classic keeps restarting. Already tried several solutions I can find.

My iPod classic keeps randomly restarting. Sometimes it can play for a few hours, other times its just a few minutes.

I've had it just over a year and it had a replacement battery fitted (via Apple) in December but no problems until this week.

When I plug it in to my laptop (Windows) it usually gets recognised and appears in iTunes but usually vanishes from iTunes but still says "Connected" on the screen.

So far I have tried:

- Resetting iPod. (sometimes this is very slow)

- Restoring iPod to factory settings through iTunes.

- Checking MP3 files for errors with MP3 Diags and MP3val. Removed any that couldn't be repaired.

- Putting iPod into disc mode and scanning for disc errors. No errors found.

Is there anything else I could try or does anyone know what might be causing this problem? Thanks.

Thanks so much for your reply.

In diagnostic mode the results were:

Retracts: 19

Reallocs: 0

Pending Sectors: 0

PowerOn Hours: 1049

Start/Stops: 36063

Temp: Current 24c

Temp: Min 77c

Temp: Max 249c

This looks like it's not a hard drive failure? the max temp and start/stops look really high - not sure if they might be the problem?

I'm going to try reformatting and the break-up of transfers - will let you know how it goes!

Is there a way to fix corrupted CMOS data (if that's what's causing the problem)?

I tried reformatting and breaking up data transfers as suggested. Reformat went okay. As soon as the first few files had been synced, iTunes stopped recognising the iPod (still showing as connected on screen and in My Computer). Tried playing the files synced and after a few minutes the same thing happened - iPod just froze and had to be reset.

Any idea what I could try next?

I think the temperature reading are just a symptom of an earlier crash. I don't know of a way to reset them but I don't think they'll be part of the problem. That said if the device really has got too warm at some point it won't have been good for it, but the reallocation stats suggest not.

Do you have any anti-virus software? If possible exclude the iPod's drive letter and the entire iTunes/iTunes Media folder from any real time scanning. I would also avoid using the iTunes option to convert higher bitrate songs.

That is probably a false positive. Your anti-virus program should really ignore the iPod altogether, then it won't trip up iTunes when it attempts to write data to it.

If possible exclude the iPod's drive letter and the entire iTunes/iTunes Media folder from any real time scanning.

If not possible try temporarily disabling your AV next time you try to restore your iPod and see if you get better results.
