I am adding a 250GB external bootable SSD. Need help!

I am adding a 250GB external bootable SSD as my main drive but the files on my current drive and more then that. My main question is how can I store my photos and ones that I add later on the current 1GB "D" drive instead of the new SSD? The system Automatically adds them to the Main drive.

I'm a Newbie with this by the way.

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Another problem i forgot to mention is that my original drive is inside the Mac Mini and I'm using the SSD as the Boot drive. I can't get access to the files on the original drive if I boot from the SSD. Would I have to export the pictures somewhere, maybe just the desktop on the original boot drive and access them when i boot from the SSD that way?
