I have a mac book sunning Safari 10.6.8 snow leopard slow my mac is 2011 with 2.1 intel and 1gig DDR ram can I upgrade to cure this or is there some other reason I should look for.

Firefox.com is an acceptable alternate web browser that will work with sites that do not like Safari from Mac OS X 10.6.8.
If you do want to upgrade, then more RAM will be essential, because 1GB is too little for newer versions of OS X.
1 GB is low even for snow Leopard. 1.5 GB was even low for my G4 running Tiger OS. Although Apple may say "minimum" they really, really mean it. If I recall correctly 2 GB was recommended minimum for Mavericks but when I received a MacBook with 2GB and Mavericks it said the base system was using 1.95 GB of the 2GB. About enough RAM left to run TextEdit. 🙂
is it a white macbook? if may only get os x lion unless its 2009 or newer then it would get El Capitan
