DCIM folder not showing all my photos?

Hi, I have an Iphone 5s and a mini ipad. I have Windows 7 on a Dell laptop. I have just plugged in my iphone so i can take some videos and photos off to gain some storage. I have plugged it in and the DCIM folder appears, but it only gives me a few folders with only January and February 2016 photos/videos showing - My phone has photos back from 2 years ago (and a total of a few thousand, where as when plugged in it only shows 200 odd) I'm not sure what to do - i need all my photos backed up! its the same with the ipad too.

FYI - i have plugged my husbands iphone 6 into the same laptop and all his photos appear fine. I've double checked all the photo settings and we have the same.
