Flashing Folder with ? Icon

Turned off my MacBook Pro 13" (Mid-2012) and when I turned it back on I stared blankly at a flashing folder icon with a question mark. I went through the disk utility functions, but my startup disk never appeared and it seems as if my hdd is no longer communicating. I removed the hdd and plugged it into an external hd case and viola, hdd shows up. Does this mean that I need to replace the hdd tape cable? Not liking my Macbook Pro being used as a paper weight.

If plugging it back in and still doesn't show up then I would recommend buying a new cable, but if that still doesn't work then it would probably be a logic board issue. So just trying getting a new hard drive cable
