Why is my music showing up grey on iTunes when I try to sync with iPhone?

I'm trying to put music that I made from my computer onto my iPhone 6. I export the music from my program as a .wav file and then add that file to my iTunes library. I then try to sync it to my phone but when the sync is over my song isn't in my music library and it shows up grey on iTunes. I've tried converting it to .AAC and .mp3 but it always ends up grey. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
