Q: MacBook Pro won't shutdown or wake from sleep after El Capitan update

Ever since I updated to El Capitan 10.11.3 I've been having so much trouble with my MacBook. It won't wake from a long sleep, and when I try shutting down, the icons on my desktop disappear as if its going to shut down, but then just freezes so I have to force shutdown. I've also been noticing sluggish performance, such as slow startup and applications taking forever to open. I've tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM, rerunning the update, even running a combo update as sometimes that fixes errors with a normal update, but nothing seems to work. Is there something I'm missing, or something I can try? Sorry if this problem has already been addressed, I'm just desperate for a fix.

    Hi Cris' Bizness,

It certainly appears that you've tried all of the main troubleshooting steps for the issue of your MacBook not waking from a long sleep. Here are a few more things I would try/check:

    • Are you using VMWare Fusion on this Mac?
    • Check your Bluetooth settings.  Unpair all Bluetooth devices and reconnect only the ones you are currently using.
    • Login items - remove all of the apps to see if that helps with starting up the Mac

OS X El Capitan: If you think you have incompatible login items

    Take care,

    HI joe_7399,

Oddly enough, all my Bluetooth devices seemed to have vanished. They seem to have been unpaired without me knowing. I forgot to mention that i did have VMware installed, but after reading about others having their problems fixed after uninstalling it, (and it wasn't even compatible amymore) I uninstalled it. thanks to your reply, I did however go back and noticed a lot if its files were still there, so I dug around and managed to remove them all. However, that did not fix my problem. I even tried removing all the login items like you suggested to no avail. Oh well, I'll just have to keep looking. Thanks anyway for your help.

    Hi Cris,

At this point, I think it would be helpful for one of our technical advisors to work with you one-to-one to look into the issues you are having with your MacBook Pro waking from sleep.   Or, if you live near an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Services provider, and advisor can look at your Mac with you in person.  Click here to initiate that support.

    Cheers,
