My friend suddenly passed away, and her mom cannot access her macbook because she doesn't know the password. There are photos on the macbook that she would like to have, but doesn't know the procedure on how to go about accessing them. What can she do?

If the mom has access to an administrator account this may be helpful following those steps.
Depending on how your friend had the computer set up, it may be tired to her Apple ID which the mom, assuming she's the inheritor, may be able to contact Apple for help recovering the account.
