trouble copying iPhoto library to external hd?

All was ok until I tried to drag library to external hd and mac would not release the library to the Seagate.

iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

How is the External Hard Disk formatted and what else is stored on the External Hard Disk ?
