Sorting a specific range of data within a spreadsheet

I have a spreadsheet in which I want to sort data for a specific range within it. However I cannot see where I can perform this without sorting everything else which appears in the rows outside of the range that I want to support. Help!

Hi Bluesboy,

Please post a Screen Shot of your table and tell us what you want to sort. Numbers mimics a database where each row (record) remains intact. Jay-Ray's answer is correct in answer to your original question.

To place a Screen shot here, see Wayne's User Tip:

To sort a portion of a table, move it to another table, sort and place it back (at your peril 👿).

Regards,

Ian.

Numbers only allows you to sort on a by-row basis. If you want to sort only a few columns of a table, then you should

select the range you want to sort,

copy

click the canvas of the sheet (the background)

paste

sort the resulting, temporary table

select the contents of the table you just sorted,

copy

now paste that back to the original table

It seems like a lot of steps but actually can be done very quickly
