I cannot erase data from my former iphone 4s 8gb

I have just upgraded and want to sell my old iPhone 4s 8gb. I am going through the erase all data process, but when I input my Apple id when prompted, and press erase, the phone screen just shudders and doesn;t do anything. It is as if it doesn't recognise my id, but I know it is the correct password.
