Iphone 6 needs updated version of iTunes, but it's updated!!

I have iPhone 6 running iOS9.2.1 trying to connect it to my mac pro -running MacOSX 10.6.8, via iTunes 14.1 after all the updates I still get the message "The iPhone “me’s iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes." but everything is updated, what's the problem?
