word update stuck

word update stuck

The MS Word update got stuck. I went to one of microsoft mac help communities online. The suggestion was to log off and then log on holding down the "shift" key, which I did. A gray screen appeared with only a white box stating "installing software update" and audio saying that I should not shut down until the install has completed. It's now been 3 hours. I see a couple of different suggestions online, but not sure the most appropriate. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

As it looks like the update got stuck, I'm afraid the only solution is to restart your Mac and see if Word works properly after the restart. Then, try reinstalling the update.

Even though the explicit instructions are to not restart in order to avoid damage to the computer?

It's the only option you have. Note that the update should have finished hours ago if it went well, so do not expect it to be installed if you keep on waiting. A restart is your only option.

(I hope you have a backup of your files).

Always use time machine. Worked and no data lost. Simpler than thought. Thanks for your help.

FYI: When updating MS Office products I always close the browser first and the update never stuck.
