Since updating to elCapitan, my speed has been slow. My iMac is a 2009 model with plenty of space. What can i do to address this? If I need to wipe it clean and start over, how do I do that being sure I save my relevant data?

How much RAM is installed? El Cap needs a min of 4GB; more is better. of the severl 2009 models ("Early/Late"; 20, 21.5,24 or 27 inch) the oleast capable can use up to 8GB RAM and some as much as 32GB.
The following items are known to slow performance regardless of which OS you install:
1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimization" applications?
3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?
6) Did your financial institution ask you to install Trusteer EndPoint Protection (also known as Trusteer Rapport)?
Do any apply to your computer?

Download EtreCheck from the following site: http://etrecheck.com/ (Don't worry...the developer is a known guy on these forums)
Install then run the program. Post the results back in this forum so we can analyze the output.
Please remove the "Webroot" product by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different.
Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software again.
