My wife's iPad mini hasn't been used for months. She plugged it into her laptop to charge. Now the mini wants a pass code (which never was set) AND it has lost track of the date (it says Thursday January 1). I think that date is the epoch (start of UNIX time). Any ideas on how to get the mini usable again?
The only think I can think of is to try a reset (hold the power and home keys down until the Apple logo appears).

I would say to follow the instructions for a forgotten passcode, found here. If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
