Can I upgrade to Yosemite instead of El Capitan?
Or is my only option to upgrade to the latest?

If you didn’t download Yosemite from the Mac App Store before El Capitan came out, go to a physical Apple Store and ask for it. If you did, log into the Mac App Store with the same Apple ID and click on the Purchases tab.
