Quick facts: Filevault off
OS X 10.10.5
The mac's home folder (located on the HD not on an an external HD) is 320+ GB but the computer is only 250 GB large and all of the space is being taken up by Movies folder. In About this mac it shows there is 2 GB available. What's the deal?

Click startup drive "macintosh hd"
press command + i
I'd believe these numbers.

I found 140GB of data that wasn't shown in my user folder. Though my folder had 40GB in it, it showed 180GB. Turned out to be old iPhone/ iPod backups. Go to iTunes/ preferences/ devices. Select the old device. Delete backup. Be careful not to delete your current device. That resolved it. 140GB freed up.
