Can I delete these textedit files?
There are these huge textedit files that have to do with FCPX on my computer taking up 5 GB of storage. Can I delete them?
Final Cut Pro X, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), iMac 2015

WWhere exactly are these files? If they're tender files they can be deleted from inside the application.
Movies > FCPX Library > Event > Render Files > High Quality Media > [Folder with all those files]
AAre you inside the library bundle? Close that up. In the application select the event and use Delete Generated Event Files and trash the render files.
Will that have any negative effects or are those unneeded files?
TThe delete generated files dialogue gives you the option of deletimg used or unused files. You can delete all. Re-render what you need to render or switch off background rendering in prefs and not render anything.
The key word here is "Generated". There is no harm in deleting those files, because they were generated by the application, and can be generated again, if needed. Like Tom said, don't mess with those files in the Finder. Use FCP X, File->Delete Generated Files... (the actual menu text will depend on what you have selected; if you select a library, project or event, the wording and the effect of the command will reflect your choice).
Note: as you realized, these files often take up a lot of space.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I cleared near 500 GB!
