iTunes syncing music that is not checked

I have a MacBook Air running OS X El Capitan and an iPhone 6 running the latest iOS.

For the past few months, iTunes has been syncing music that is not in my playlist. The selected playlist syncs fine to my phone, but I have all of this other music that is being synced to my phone that is not on the playlist. In iTunes settings I have the 'only sync checked songs' selected and the 'automatically fill free space with songs' unselected, but they are STILL syncing to my iPhone. Any ideas?! Thanks!
