The applications folder

The Applications folder (not "Apps", but the folder which was previously located at the far right of my dock next to the Documents folder, is no longer visible for some reason. It contained all installed programs (pre-installed as well as programs installed over the years). It was not deleted. I was able to open a couple of documents using some of these installed programs, so they still seem to be accessible. But I cannot find / view the program icons anywhere. I am unsure if this has anything to do with the recent installation of El Capitan. Is there anyway to restore this Applications folder? It was much more convenient when accessible from the dock. Thanks.

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu, double-click the internal drive, and drag the Applications folder to the Dock.
