Is there a way to check the serial number to determine whether a macbook of any type is stolen?
Any ideas?

In the US, checks for stolen can only be done through a law enforcement agency. Apple apparently will not do it.
Agreeing with my friend Allan - mostly... "Apple will not do it" should read "cannot" - how can Apple know if something has been stolen? Create and maintain yet another database? Would a car company know if one of their cars was stolen? How? Both Apple and the car company would have to integrate with Law Enforcement systems = notoriously antiquated, BTW.
If you have ANY doubts about the "hotness" of a thing, it probably is "too hot to handle"
