how to add new printer to osx 10.6

I am currently using a Macbook pro with OSX 10.6.8. I connected a new HP Envy 5540 printer and it does not print. Is there a generic print driver I can get to allow this printer to work with my OSX 10.6.8?

Unfortunately, the only Envy printers with included support on 10.6.8 are:

HP ENVY 100 D410 series *3.3.2PS
HP ENVY 110 series *3.3.2PS
HP ENVY 120 series *3.3.2PS
HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One *3.3.2PS
HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One *3.3.2PS
HP ENVY 5640 series *3.3.2PS
HP ENVY 5660 series *3.3.2PS

See this support document for other supported printers:

You might find some printer drivers on open source for 10.6.8, or some on HP's own website. See my FAQ*:

Otherwise I'd try to return or sell the printer and get one that is known to be supported.
