Looking for a way to write on a photo in iphoto on my Mac

Which software are you using with your photos? If you are using iPhoto, iPhoto cannot write onto the photos. Export the photo to the Desktop, then open it in Preview or any other editor you have that can write text onto a photo.

You can set Preview as an external editor and use the Annotate tool to write on a photo - or you can export from iPhoto and use any image editor to do that to the exported photo

It's not really. In the iPhotos preferences under Advanced, select Preview or whatever editor you would prefer

Then when you hover over a picture, a small arrow will appear in the corner of the photo click on it and select "Edit in External Editor".

There's now an easier way to edit a photo from within the Photos library with a 3rd party editor. There's a new app available at the App Store that will let you edit from within Photos with any 3rd party editor of your choice. It's named External Editors For Photos. Once installed you access via the Extensions option in the Edit window:
